The bad news for tax evaders in Katima Mulilo is that the
Ministry of Finance will open a satellite office for the Directorate of Inland
Revenue on 1 October.
“This office will perform its functions under the auspices
of the Receiver of Revenue-North Eastern Division (Rundu),” the ministry said
in a statement this week.
It urged taxpayers in the Caprivi Region to make use of the
office, which will handle general enquiries, issuing of tax related forms and
books, acceptance of tax returns and tax related forms, verification of tax
invoices and documentation for audit and refund purposes and field visits for
audit, refund and recovery purposes.
“The Ministry of Finance commits itself to provide effective
and efficient services to the general public at large and specifically to
remove rural areas and hope that the opening of the satellite office in Katima
Mulilo will fulfil this dream,” the statement.
Over the past year, the ministry has taken measures to
improve the collection of revenue in the country. Last year, it conducted a
forensic tax audit at its Oshakati Regional Office.
The ministry invited the public to provide information on
any possible irregularities which might assist with investigations, becoming
the first time in Namibia that such an exercise was conducted by the Department
of Inland Revenue.
