Forced to endure scary taxi rides |

Dear Editor
Sir-, I enjoyed reading Patrick Hainguru's letter on his
daily experience in taxis. In fact, that letter makes me remember that I also
have to endure the taxi drivers everyday. I have lived in New York for over ten
years and I became used to the convenience of a taxi around every corner. But
in New York there is also a very good bus system and a subway system - these
last two we don't have in Namibia, and so we are forced to use taxis.
In the USA, regulations for taxis are very strict. Because
the authorities take a taxi off the road without hesitating, or suspend a taxi
driver, their compliance is high. US taxi drivers are not the best drivers in
the world, but they watch out. It is safe to ride in them.
In Namibia, I have found that taxi drivers think they are
their own law. The taxis are more often than not, not even worthy for the
junkyard, and the taxi drivers intimidate the police.
I beg the traffic police to do their job. I am scared every
day getting into a taxi, but what can I do. I have to get around.
Praying alive,
Festus Matongu
