The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will in March undertake a trade and investment mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to a statement released by the South African trade ministry. The mission known as “SADC Trade Mission to the DRC Trade and Investment Conference – Economic Reconstruction of DRC – Business Opportunities” will take place from 25 March to 28 March. This is the first trade mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), hosted jointly by the Association of SADC Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCCI)), and the Fédération des Entreprises du Congo (FEC). The statement said an expected 200 local business leaders and captains of industry will accompany the South African Minister of Trade and Industry, Mandisi Mpahlwa. Trade missions historically have served to generate new business for participants while solidifying ties across borders, and the statement said the mission in particular is expected to be effective in light of the strong relationship between South Africa, SADC countries and the DRC. The primary objectives of the forum and trade mission will be to promote and facilitate trade and investment opportunities between the DRC and Southern Africa, thereby promoting economic development in both countries and providing a forum for networking. The trade mission will include business-to-business matchmaking meetings in the fields of: agriculture, ICT and telecommunications, mining, manufacturing, financial services, tourism/conservation, roads/rail construction, construction and building, petroleum/natural gasses, transport, services, water resources, healthcare and pharmaceuticals.
