The telecommunication industry is faced with the challenge of providing high quality service, a senior government official said last week.
Deputy Minister of works, transport and communication Stefanus Mogosti said this week when he officially opened a meeting of the Quality of Services Development Group (ITU-QSDG) held in Swakopmund.

The meeting was attended by various international communication experts including Luis Sousa Cardoso, president of the Forum for International Irregular Network Access (FIINA).The main agenda of the meeting was the quality of services (QoS) in the telecom sector.“Your meeting is an excellent forum to link vendors and providers of technology, services and equipment. With a number of technical papers and presentations as well as experts from all over the world, I am sure the meeting proceedings will be of immense benefit and use to the participants and the telecom sector as a whole,” said Mogosti. He said the issue of QoS in a multi-provider environment is a major challenge for any operator offering any service at the open telecom market. Mogosti said the dynamics of today's telecommunications industry have created new QoS issues and a stronger need to manage QoS. These includes deregulation, voice and data convergence, Internet effect, multi-domain nature of networks, service level agreements (SLAs) and the drive to prevent customers from switching providers.“With data traffic overtaking voice traffic, the need for integrated and efficient multi-service networks has given rise to the reality of converged voice, data and Internet application networks,” he said.
