What happened?
For those tourists and visitors from the
northern hemisphere who come to Namibia to enjoy warmth and sunshine as a break
from the grey skies of the usual northern winter, we came up trumps and rewarded
these visitors for their faith in our sunny reputation.
Sunshine galore superceded the expected
showers of one week ago. Sunshine has reigned supreme for some five days, at
least. The colder air succeeding the active upper air trough relieved daytime
temperatures by as much 10 degrees where the maximum readings were concerned,
particularly in the southern areas.

and the west, fine sunny weather prevailed. In real terms, that means hot/very
hot and dry. For the remainder of the country, some cloud was present and with
some fortune, showers developed. All in all though, this has been a dry way to
start February.
Such rain as was measured showed a good
33mm at Katima sitting on the fringe of the ITCZ, but by ITCZ standards, this
is a poor relation of the 100mm falls reported last week. Tsumkwe also had a
single fall of some 24mm while much further south, Buitepos received 50mm - their
first rain in this still quite New Year.

Oscillation (ENSO) seems to hold the upper hand. The expectation for the second
part of the season remains limited.
