What motivates us to keep supporting a man that is killing our mothers and fathers, our sisters and brothers, and most importantly, our children? This dark side of our African psyche has always amazed me. It keeps reappearing whenever we face our biggest threats, and it inevitably destroys us, our communities and our family structures. It also baffles the non-African outside world, leading to all sorts of opinions why we are often seen as lost human beings on a lost continent, too big for us to manage.

Come 21 June every year, I am fond of saying that the winter is over. This date marks the northern summer solstice, thus the middle of winter for us. Of course, winter will not be over by Saturday, but it always helps me get through the second half with much less agony over the cold. In any case, in Namibia winter is over so wie so by the second half of July.

My hurt is always gripped by the sad images one sees on television showing scores of displaced people living under the most appalling conditions. And invariably these images are filled with the desperate reality of suffering infants and toddlers.

The problem of illegal immigrants is not new. From the late seventies, thousands of Mozambicans, Zimbabweans, Basotho and Swazi were deported on a monthly basis. A blind eye was turned to this phenomenon. How could one explain to the world that South Africa had such a monstrous regime when thousands upon thousands of migrants risked life and limb just to be able to get in?
