Airline pilots break the silence

Dear Sir,
NAPA has, over the past 21 months, made every effort to avoid industrial action. Air Namibia management has had every opportunity, in the same period, to engage constructively in the salary negotiation process.
Therefore management’s plea to NAPA for extra time to implement the turnaround plan needs to be put into perspective. The turnaround plan has been in operation for one year already; despite this the MD now states that the company is technically bankrupt.
The total monthly cost of NAPA’s demand is a fraction of the daily cost of this strike. NAPA is shocked to realize that management would rather face these crippling losses than give any serious consideration to their pilots’ request for fair pay.
Air Namibia is able to prolong the strike through their employment of foreign pilots, many of whom cost the company more than double what a Namibian in the same position currently earns.

By whose authority will NMP move into a protected area?

To the Editor,
During the past few weeks several articles were published in which the CEO of Namibia Marine Phosphate (NMP), Mr. Barnabas Uugwanga, voiced his opinion on a variety of issues relating to their Sandpiper marine phosphate project.
On reading all of these, many readers can’t be blamed when they do come to the conclusion that he never disappoints to disappoint.
His views on what really matters and what causes concern about marine phosphate mining are so superficial. They lack substance.  What is absolutely certain is that besides the serious ecological impacts of mining of seabed sediments on the marine environment, the bringing ashore thereof at Walvis Bay will have significant environmental impacts on the terrestrial environment as well. This has been explained to him and NMP, but can’t be comprehended for them. This they fail as they are clearly detached from reality.
Is it when faced with realities that  one rather seeks refuge in nonsensical utterances, such as his grotesque remarks about protected areas in Namibia. He sees no reason why the Sandpiper project can’t be accommodated in one of these areas. His comments do open up several more fissures in the facade of NMP’s commitment to environmental issues. In advancing unctuousness for arguments, [it] underscores NMP’s confused approach to these issues.

Swakopmunders refuse to move their Hansa pensions

Dear Editor,
I turn to you in the hope that you may be able to get to the truth regarding the O & L pension fund transfer of its pensioned members but not its employee members.
In June we, the O & L pensioners here in Swakopmund were contacted by Mr Heuschneider who had been in previous years the manager of the now closed Hansa Brewery but was also a pensioner at that time. We were invited to a meeting at his home, where we were given forms to read. Basically we were told that O & L pension fund wanted us to vote in favour of moving to Old Mutual and taking our capital with us. As an incentive we would receive upon moving, a one-off payment of 4% of one month’s pension. We were told that in order for the transfer to Old Mutual to be accepted, there had to be two thirds of all pensioners in the fund to vote in favour of the transfer. This would take time as many live in the north.
At the group meeting I was at, there were 7 persons. All were against the move for various reasons, such as fee stoppages unlike O & L, poorer performance portfolios compared to O & L, and some members had had bad experiences with Old Mutual.

RDP denies manipulating striking teachers

The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) denied claims made by Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, Jerry Ekandjo that the striking teachers were instigated by the opposition parties and in particular RDP.
According to a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Jeremiah Nambinga, Ekandjo made those allegation at Eenhana in the Ohangwena region.
“Jerry Ekandjo must be reminded that teachers are professionals and not political appointees. They qualify as teachers because they are intelligent and capable of determining what is good for them and the nation. For Jerry Ekandjo to imply that the striking teachers are manipulated by opposition political parties for political expedience is not only an attempt to undermine their intelligence but it is a serious insult of the worst order,” he said.
He said it is on record that most of the Namibian teachers have played a significant role in the liberation struggle of this country and were unfortunately perceived by the colonisers then that they were manipulated by the liberation movement.

Rental sharks must be nabbed!!!

To the editor,
“Hi Guys this room is still avail, can move in anytime - N$2100.00,Khd near park foods - room is inside a flat, cal 0813555587 for viewing”
This is one of many posts in a popular group on Facebook titled “rent a room, flat, house” that prompted me to write this letter. First question before you even continue reading this letter, does the above post make any economic or humane sense? While you think about that, let me bombard you with a few realities. How on earth does one pay N$2100 for a room inside a flat in Khomasdal? How? This shark attempts to extort money from honest hard working youthful Namibians need to see end. The ACC prides itself for nabbing Angolans/Namibians for fake certificates, diploma’s and degrees while they should actually be investigating how landlords of this property can allow such practices on their premises.
