The spay campaign, which is expected to take place in December 2012, is sponsored by Bank Windhoek. Approximately 200 dogs and cats are expected to be spayed during the campaign. “If it wasn’t for this sponsorship, the SPCA would not have been able to carry out this exercise as we have been trying to raise funds for a long time” said Hilary du Plessis, manager of the SPCA.

Animation reaches youth

Anthony Deaton, Public Affairs Officer of the Embassy of the United States of America.Joel Haikali, Producer of the newly released animation. At a interactive workshop hosted by the American Cultural Centre, a group of young people had the opportunity to vent their fears and aspirations to deal with the major impact HIV has on their lives.
A video animation set the context for the frank discussion that followed.
Accoding to Joel Haikali a local film maker and producer of the animation, one of the issues that emerged was peer pressure. “The wish to fit in and to be liked is a major factor that get young people into situations in which they might agree to engage in sexual activities even if they might not really be ready for it or want it.”
Anthony Deaton, the Public Affairs Officer of the Embassy of the United States said the country is doing a good job in spreading the message surrounding HIV and Aids. “With the animation, we are trying to encourage debate and to encourage all Namibians especially the youth to try and find out who they are and become confident enough to make their own decisions and stick to them and we aim to reach out to young people.”

Embassy grant rebuilds NaDEET centre

Dr Romeo Bertolini and NaDEET director, Viktoria Keding (centre front) with learners from the Danie Joubert Primary School in Mariental enjoying the comfort of the new bungalows at the NaDEET Centre in the Namib Rand Nature Reserve.Namib Rand is icy cold in winter but blisteringly hot in summer. This famous 120,000 ha private nature reserve bordering the Namib Naukluft National Park, is the setting where the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust’s (NaDEET) conduct their environmental programmes for learners. But the trust’s base camp was in need of repairs and the German Embassy decided to help.
Last week, Dr. Romeo Bertolini, Counsellor for Development Co-operation at the German Embassy  inaugurated the upgraded and improved camping bungalows at the NaDEET Centre. The embassy sponsored the renovation project with N$250,000.
Dr Bertolini said “It’s been a very interesting visit: I’m very impressed by NaDEET’s educational activities and I am sure that the improved facilities will contribute to make the stay at NaDEET Centre even more enjoyable.”
The new bungalows reflect the style of the main building and follow the building codes of the Namib Rand Nature Reserve. The structure is set on a wooden platform with the bottom half of the walls of wood and the upper half of shade netting to retain the outdoor feeling. Unlike the original design, the new houses are now covered by a corrugated zink roof.
