The United Nations in Namibia held a workshop with several regions in Windhoek this week, which was aimed at staff and volunteers of multi-purpose community centres.
The workshop took place on Wednesday and Thursday, and focused on equipping participants with hands-on experience in finalising the mission statements and management structures for their centres.
The main objective of the workshop was to expand the knowledge, practice and to provide access to information in multiple formats to rural communities.
The material presented at the workshop was compiled from need assessments, trainings and pilot projects at various centres.
The material serve as a guideline to centres to become catalysts for community voice and people-centred development.

The Namibia Business Innovation Center (NBIC), together with Rlabs Academy, is hosting its first session of three workshops aimed at training young people in social media and its applications at the NBIC Innovation Village. The workshop started on 13 February and will end on the 24th of this month.
Rlabs Academy’s mission is to teach young people how to use different social networks and to learn IT skills, thus allowing them to become trainers, consultants or software developers for organisations that want to create, enhance and develop their networking activities. Previous workshop graduates have gone on to become trainers or consultants for businesses, creating about 400 jobs in total.
Rene Peterson-Parker, director of Rlabs and Brent Willians, operations director, are responsible for the Rlabs Academy and its training programmes.
According to Peterson-Parker and Williams, they empower young minds by giving them training and imparting knowledge.
Jukskei raises funds for cancer

Jukskei teams from the central region held a special Business League last year to raise money for cancer awareness. Last weekend, they presented the Cancer Association with a cheque for N$5000 - proceeds from the competition. A very appreciative Cancer Association assured the jukskei players that the funds will be used responsibly. Childhood cancer a reality

An estimated 440 children are diagnosed with cancer across the world every day, while another 250 have succumbed to it.
According to Kenneth Dollman, whose child was diagnosed with Leukemia, cancer in children is but a fraction of the global cancer burden.
He says for children and their families, hope, courage and determination makes a difference between life and death.
The International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) and the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations (ICCCPO) launched a targeted grassroots health advocacy campaign to better educate the public in recognising the early warning signs for childhood cancer on the International Childhood Cancer Day which was celebrated on 15 February.
Dr Gabriele Calaminus, president of SIOP, warned that symptoms of cancer can often be interpreted as common childhood ailments.

Legal Shield awarded bursaries to Ndamonao Ilovo and Hilya Ndilulu, both B. Juris students at the University of Namibia, valued at N$25 000 each on 9 February. A 2011 Bursary recipient, Margaret Malambo, advised the 2012 bursary recipients to work hard, realise their dreams, be thankful for the opportunity and to use the money wisely. Legal Shield said it is a firm believer that education plays a pivotal role in the development of a country. The organisation has granted 21 bursaries to deserving Namibian law students over the past decade through its Corporate Social Investment initiatives, totaling N$400,000. Annette Brand, head of Trustco Insurance Ltd, remarked that Legal Shield wishes to empower the next generation of legal practitioners in Namibia and has this year gone one step further by undertaking to employ the bursary recipients upon completion of their studies in order to ensure a smooth transition from academia to profession.
